How the Shooting Percentage Calculator Works
Calculates standard field goal percentage plus effective field goal percentage (eFG%) — a basketball analytics metric published and used by basketball statisticians that adjusts for the fact that a made 3-pointer is worth 50% more than a made 2-pointer, giving a more accurate picture of shooting efficiency than raw field goal percentage alone.
Formula
FG% = Made / Attempted × 100 · eFG% = (Made + 0.5 × 3PT Made) / Attempted × 100
eFG% credits made three-pointers with an extra half-point of value relative to made two-pointers, since a 3-pointer produces 50% more points per shot. A player who shoots more 3-pointers can have a higher eFG% than raw FG% would suggest.
Calculation Example
8 field goals made on 15 attempts, including 3 made 3-pointers on 6 attempts: FG% = 8/15×100 = 53.3%. eFG% = (8 + 0.5×3)/15×100 = 63.3%.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is eFG% higher than FG% in this example?
Because made three-pointers count for extra value in eFG% — a player who makes threes gets credit for the added point value those shots produce, which raw FG% doesn't capture.
Do the 3-point makes/attempts need to be a subset of the total?
Yes — 3-point made and attempted figures should be included within (not in addition to) your total field goals made and attempted.
