How the Dog Walk Time Calculator Works

Provides a general daily walk/exercise time range based on commonly published size and age guidelines (e.g. American Kennel Club-style guidance). This is a general guideline, not veterinary advice — energy level, breed, and health conditions all affect actual needs.

Formula

Guideline range by size/age band (not a single formula)

Puppies: roughly 5 minutes of structured exercise per month of age, twice a day, until fully grown. Adult dogs: 30 minutes (small/low-energy breeds) up to 60–120 minutes (large/high-energy breeds) per day. Senior dogs: 20–30 minutes, lower-impact.

Calculation Example

A 6-month-old puppy: ≈ 5 × 6 = 30 minutes per session, twice daily.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a hard rule?

No — treat it as a starting guideline. Dogs with joint issues, brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, or other health conditions need vet-specific guidance, not this general range.
